Dominican offers master’s degrees in Library Science and Knowledge Management.  Dominican periodically offers a CI course entitled ‘The Role of Competitive Intelligence in the Modern Business Decision-Making Process (LIS 884).’  The course introduces the concepts behind, the processes involved, and the intrinsic value of competitive intelligence as a modern business decision-making tool. LIS 530M - Competitive Intelligence. Organizations and organizational units increasingly employ competitive intelligence (CI) to support decision-making, management, and to build and sustain competitive advantages. As the formal practice of CI has grown in adoption and sophistication, information professionals are often charged with intelligence-related responsibilities. This course examines CI models, functions, and practices; the roles of information professionals in CI, and the management of CI. Discussion and practice topics include: intelligence ethical and legal considerations; identifying intelligence needs; intelligence project management, research methods, analysis, production, and dissemination; the uses of intelligence; intelligence sources and tools; managing the intelligence function; and the evolution of CI. A working knowledge of print and electronic business information sources is recommended. Prerequisite: LIS 404 and LIS 407.

Course Description

MGT 4350 - Special Projects in Management: Competitive Intelligence. This fully on-line course will introduce students to the field of Competitive Intelligence (CI). CI involves the collection, analysis, synthesis and dissemination of actionable knowledge from the business environment, to provide a competitive edge and support organizational decision making. CI processes and products will be explored via a CI project with an emphasis on research techniques and information resources.    In addition to the required text, all students in MGT 4350-Competitive Intelligence are required to join the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP). Membership in this organization provides students with access to materials that will be used throughout the course, including SCIP publication archives, directories, and weekly news bulletins.

Admissions, Credits

This is a senior-level, four credit undergraduate course open to students enrolled in the management department.  The course will offered for the first time in Spring, 2008. Prerequisites: FIN 3850, MKT 3405, MGT 3315 and MGT 3325; see Dr. Wright at cwright@ucmo.edu for possible exceptions to the prerequisites.   Enrollment limited to 16 students.

Competitive intelligence is both a process and product.  An effective competitive intelligence program (CIP) is one of the foundations on which strategies and tactics are built, assessed and modified.
